Skinners’ History Workshop – Document 12

The document which I am examining is dated 29 October 1800. It is a petition from a Mr John Fortye Walker a student of Benet’s College (otherwise Corpus Christi College) Cambridge  to the Master and Wardens etc., of the Skinners Company . He is anxious to secure the Exhibition funded by the benefaction of Sir James Lancaster. His petition is supported by a testimonial from the Master and Dean of the College.

The questions I hope to pursue:

  • Who was James Fortye Walker
  • Was he successful in his petition and what was his later career (if any)?
  • What were the exhibitions funded by Sir James Lancaster and who was he?
  • Are there still such exhibitions funded by the Company?
  • Is there a special relationship between Corpus Christi College Cambridge and the Skinners Company and, if so, why?
