Sir Thomas Smythe’s Charity

Registered charity number: 210775

Provides financial and pastoral support to individuals in need, usually older or disabled people, living in various West Kent parishes.

The Charity founded by Sir Thomas Smythe's will in 1625 currently operates two schemes.

  • Scheme 1 provides small one-off extra needs grants to individuals in need
  • Scheme 2 provides larger block grants to local welfare organisations that work with people in significant financial need who are vulnerable and isolated

Scheme 1

We do not accept applications from individuals directly.  If you require assistance and you think you meet the eligibility criteria, please ask your support worker to look at our website and contact us on your behalf. If you are a support worker and have a client in need, we may be able to assist.

We only accept applications via referral from support agencies such as social and support services, housing associations, refuge and rehabilitation organisations, and local charities.

Eligibility criteria - who can apply?

Support workers can apply on behalf of clients who fall into one or more of the following priority areas.

  • Those living on a low income - most beneficiaries should be on a means-tested benefit, although each case is looked at individually
  • Those living in their own home, either as a tenant or owner-occupier
  • Those living in one of the 26 parishes as specified by Charity’s Scheme (please see the table below)

What do we fund?

We can consider grants for items not covered by benefits such as

  • unexpected household repairs
  • replacing domestic appliances
  • travel costs to and from hospital
  • one-off expenses such as deep cleaning

Scheme 2

If you are a local welfare organistion that works with people who are vulnerable, isolated, and in financial need, you may be eligible to apply for funding through this programme.

Eligibility criteria - who can apply?

We welcome applications from registered charities and not-for-profit organisations whose total annual income is under £1,000,000.

You need to be working in at least one (or more) of the designated parishes listed in the table below - your parish boundaries can be checked by visiting achurchnearyou.com

You need to be working with one of more of the following groups.

  • Older people
  • Disadvantaged people
  • People with disabilities
  • Victims of domestic violence
  • Those in recovery from substance misuse
  • Those living with mental health issues

Our Grants & Exclusions

We can consider grants for either capital items (e.g. equipment) or core running costs, providing they can be demonstrated to make a clear and significant contribution to your organisation.

One-off and multi-year grants are available, not to exceed £1,000 per annum, for a maximum duration of 3 years (i.e. maximum total award possible under the scheme is £3,000).

We cannot assist with requests from individuals. We operate a separate funding scheme for individuals. Please contact the grants administrator for further details.

We cannot consider applications from organisations with an annual income of over £1,000,000

How To Apply & Submission Deadline Dates

Applications for Scheme 1 (grants to individuals) can be submitted at any time during the year.

Applications for Scheme 2 (grants to organisations) are considered twice a year, in April and October and should be submitted by latest mid-September and mid-March in order to be considered.  Please note, due to limited funding, not all applications may be successful.
