Lawrence Atwell’s Charity

Grants are available for young people from low-income backgrounds, to help them gain vocational, accredited qualifications.

We offer grants of up to £1,500 for people aged 16 to 26, to take courses (up to level 3) that will help them move into employment. Funding can be given for course fees, equipment/materials, travel costs, childcare and living costs.

We can consider you for funding if you are:

  • Aged 16 – 26 (on the date your course starts)
  • A British citizen, asylum seeker or refugee, or have you lived in the UK for 3 years
  • Taking an accredited, vocational training course up to level 3. What qualification levels mean.
  • From a low income household as follows*

FAQs

What does the application process involve?

The application form will ask a range of questions about yourself and the course you wish to take. We will also ask for two references; a personal reference (i.e. a social worker, counsellor or family friend) and a tutor or professional reference.

We also ask for evidence of your full household income. We require that you send us relevant pay-slips and benefit letters to detail this.

How long does the application process take?

We recommend that applicants apply at least eight weeks before they begin a course to ensure they receive a response before it starts. However, the length of time before a decision also depends on the amount of support requested, how quickly your referees respond to our reference requests and whether you have provided all the information (including supporting documents) when submitting your application form.

Please note that if you apply very close to your course start date we cannot guarantee a decision before it starts.

How do you make decisions?

Once all necessary information has been received, our team will make a recommendation to our committee. They consider applications at the end of each calendar month; once they have reached a decision we will inform you within 3-5 working days of the meeting.

Do you have a deadline?

No. Applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. With limited funds available, applicants are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible before their course starts.
